Diffusion and Osmosis

Hypothesis
My hypothesis is that once the egg is placed in a hypo tonic solution or a hyper tonic solution then the egg will expand or shrink because of osmosis.


Materials
We used four eggs
Corn syrup
Table salt
Water
And vinegar.

Procedure
We placed the eggs in vinegar for three days. Then we had three containers with salt, water, corn syrup, and plain water. We also weighed the eggs before placing them in there new solutions.

Observations
the start mass of the eggs were 89 grams ,90 grams and 97 grams.
The end mass was 81 grams ,94 grams ,74 grams.
The egg was removed from vinegar and had no shell. It had a mass of 96 grams. It appears larger than a regular egg which has a mass of 65 grams. I observed that when we poked the egg yoke and water mixed with salt came out. All three eggs changed in mass over the three experiments.

Conclusion
The conclusion is i learned that diffusion and osmosis is possible because the eggs expanded and shrunk in hypo and hyper tonic solutions.

Relevance
Osmosis keeps us alive because it keeps nutrients and fluids running throughout the cell membrane.

This is what the egg will look like when the experiment is done it will be squishy and bouncy if the experiment is done right. You can also add food coloring to the experiment to change the final color off your egg.
